So this is a link to a MPEG you have to download to watch (not a live link) of the old Budweiser neon eagle sign along highway 40 in St Louis. Those of you who know St Louis will know that you are eye level with the 'new sign' because Hwy 40 is now double-stacked. Well not in 1962 it wasn't. Can you imagine driving toward this thing at night? In the rain? In the SNOW? Awesome machine though.

My grandparents lived in Chesterfield, and my aunt lives near U City. When Highway 40 isn't under construction, I remember driving out to my grandparents' place and watching that thing from a mile away as we headed out to their place. That is easily one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I hope that thing stays as is or is preserved in some other form.

One sign that is no longer in St. Louis was another landmark along Highway 40: the Hi Pointe Standard Oil sign. It was a huge neon sign that had the same drawing power as the Anheuser-Busch sign (minus the animation).
Today, it's a BP station but still has a huge Amoco logo for recognition's sake.

I went to St Louis for the first time last Saturday and that sign definitely made an impression. It's freaking huge.

The Eagle sign is probably my favorite part of St. Louis. I hate it here haha
The Amoco sign is really fucking cool. I drive by it all the time and I'm always surprised by how huge it is.

Before transponders and radar, pilots flying across the country would use the old Standard sign as a way-finding point at night. So much neon, it was brighter than the beacons used prior to that.

Unfortunately it doesn't currently work. Here's a photo of it in 1969
